About This Build
Twites Barn is a grade 2 listed, 5 aisled barn with complete original timber frame dating to the early 17th century. The barn had been converted in 1998/99, but was without utility, garage or car port- and effectively stood on its own in an open field.
We were engaged by our clients to help with the design, and also to help with obtaining the required planning and listed building consents for the construction of the utility/garage/car port. For our clients it was essential that the new construction be sympathetic to the barn, and that it would meet all requirements stipulated by the planners.
By engaging with our clients, we saw the opportunity to have a first floor room over the utility and garage at minimal extra cost and also to create a “courtyard” at the front of the barn. Due the fact the existing property was Listed, obtaining planning consent was not straightforward and a number of alterations were required to secure permission.
A Few Words From The Clients
“Despite a challenging planning permission, the process and various iterations of the design, were expertly and promptly handled by Sean. The final design exceeded the expectations we had at the beginning of the project.
Translation of the project to construction proceeded smoothly and fully in line with Sean’s design and specifications. Throughout Sean was forthcoming with suggestions regarding how we could optimise the design both aesthetically and for practicality.
Three years following its construction we continue to be delighted with our utility/garage/car port which never ceases to receive positive comments from visitors and particularly neighbours who remember how the barn was previously.”
